Podiatry Health Tip

Presented by Village Prodiatry Group: Buying Shoes
In my practice, a question I am asked every day is “What are the best shoes for me to wear?” Unfortunately, there is no correct answer to this question other than “The ones that are most comfortable and supportive.” As many of my patients have learned, a good pair of shoes is worth its weight in gold.
One of the most overlooked and yet often largest problem causer for feet is improper shoegear. This includes poorly fitting shoes, improper style, and worn out shoes. In my practice, I see several people per week whose foot problems can be directly related to their shoes and are often cured simply by changing into better fitting shoes. One of the most common situations is when a person has been wearing the same size shoe for many years and has not been measured. I will often check their shoes in the office and advise them go be and get measured. They will commonly find out their shoes are one to two sizes too small. This often can be attributed to their feet having grown or the manufacturers shoe sizes changing. As soon as they get shoes which fit correctly, often their black toenails, the cramping feeling in their toes, their corns at the end of their toes, and even their heel pain resolves.
Purchasing the correct shoe can often save you from injury and heal existing ones. Many injuries are caused because of overuse secondary to improper foot biomechanics. This can be aggravated by the wrong shoes for certain activities. Most shoe manufacturers, especially those making sneakers, now make specific shoes for certain activities, such as running, walking or tennis.
