Health Tip
Know your medicines like your family!
When your doctor asks you what medicine you take for your high blood pressure, how many of you say, "Oh, a little white pill, I can't remember the name", you scratch your head and try, but you can't get the name. After a few seconds, you come up with, "It starts with a T", and look hopefully at the doctor.
The truth is, a lot of pills are little and white, so the doctor will not be able to come up with the name of the pill.
It is important that you remember the names of your pills. You don't forget the names of your brothers or sisters, uncles, aunts, sons and daughters, grandchildren, do you? Pills are like family. Remember each pill like a brother or sister. Remember the name, the dose, how many times you take it in a day, and what is it for. Like your brother- his name, how old he is, how often does he call you and what kind of work he does. Sound similar? The fact is, whether your family is with you everyday or not, your pills are. Most pills for chronic diseases are here to stay with you for life, so make them your new family!
If you have trouble remembering the names, write them down on an index card and take it with you to the doctor. Better still; take all your pill bottles with you. I always tell my patients to bring all the medicines they are taking with them whenever they come to see me. That helps me to see if their diabetes or high blood pressure or thyroid problem needs a change in the dose of the medicine or if a totally different medicine is needed. Without accurate information on what pills you are taking, it is difficult for me to make any changes.
