How to lower your risk of falling:
Every year, about one-third of people over 75 fall in their homes. Some things you can do to
lower your risk include:
-
In your home:
- Make sure you have good lighting.
- Fasten rugs firmly to the floor.
- Remove exposed electrical cords from the floor.
- Install hand rails near the toilet and in the shower.
- Only use stairs with secure hand rails.
- In the kitchen and pantry, store things at easy-to-reach levels.
- Wear shoes with non-skid soles and avoid loose-fitting slippers and shoes.
-
Stay healthy:
- See your family doctor regularly.
- See your eye doctor yearly.
- Exercise to maintain muscle strength, flexibility and balance.
- Talk to your doctor about reducing medication side-effects.
- See your doctor if you have “dizzy” spells.
- If your doctor suggests a cane or walker, please use it.
- Don’t smoke.
- When you get out of bed, sit on the side of the bed for a few minutes because your blood pressure takes some time to adjust.
